Riparian buffers and cloud forest streams, Mexico

Cloud forests are highly diverse, with many endemic species, and rich in freshwater resources.  In Veracruz, Mexico, we are working with colleagues from INECOL, in Xalapa, to understand how deforestation and agriculture are impacting stream ecosystems and their linkages with riparian forests.

Our team is composed of experts from INECOL, who work on various terrestrial and aquatic groups or ecosystem processes.  Within this large project, we are collaborating in the area of food webs.  We are coordinating efforts to characterize food web structure and linkages between stream and riparian ecosystems using stable isotope techniques.

Project title in Spanish: Importancia de la vegetación ribereña en los ecosistemas acuáticos: Su función en la conservación de la calidad de agua de ríos en paisajes agropecuarios tropicales.

Our study sites are combinations of land use: Forest-Agriculture, Agriculture-Forest, Forest-Pasture, and Pasture-Forest.  The overarching goal is to understand how land use effects affect ecosystems located downstream from them.

We also had the opportunity to enjoy the "Día de Muertos" in Mexico, a unique experience!  Here is the lab "ofrenda" as an example.
