30:75:100 – The Stoichiometry of Research, Science Education and Forest Conservation in Puerto Rico

Celebrating 30 of long-term research by the Luquillo LTER program : 75 years of science education by the College of Natural Sciences, of the University of Puerto Rico : and 100 years of forest conservation in Puerto Rico.

Among many activities, we had an inauguration with the participation of many well known figures, including the UPR president.  A very memorable moment was the recognition of Dr. Frank Wadsworth for his efforts in forest conservation on the island.  He is 103 years old!

The Rio Piedras - a living urban ecosystem

We participated in the Panel I – How do scientific research contribute to human well-being?  Our presentation, using the Rio Piedras as an example, was meant to communicate that urban streams in Puerto Rico are living systems, very diverse, and with potential to provide valuable services to human beings.  At the same time, our findings in Puerto Rico provide valuable information for management of urban streams in other regions of Latin America.
