Field station experiences

Sharing our experiences working at and running field stations

The research group in Ecology, Engineering, and Society (grupo EIS in Spanish) at Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira, Colombia, invited us to visit their study site in Lisbrán.  The goal was to explore collaborations and share experiences that might help them develop a research facility at the location.

Lisbran is a beautiful wetland  system of extreme value as source of freshwater for people in Pereira, Colombia.  This lead authorities to protect the area.  Today, it is a research area for students and faculty of the Universidad Tecnológica de Pereira and other institutions in the area.

Our main contribution was to share our experiences running El Verde Field Station in Puerto Rico and our as user of field stations around the tropics.  Lisbran is just starting as a research location, but has lots of potential for developing a facility dedicated to wetland and forest research and education.

Big thanks to EIS-UTP group, in particular to Jeymmy M. Walteros, for the invitation and opportunity to learn about their work and plans to develop Lisbran as a major study site.
