Aquatic insects and stream condition in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic is rich in water resources, with many streams draining their mountains. These ecosystems provide valuable services to people, including drinking water and fishing.  At the same time, there are numerous impacts affecting streams (e.g., agriculture runoff, dams, pollution).

There have been numerous studies on the island biodiversity, but we still have a lot to learn about stream ecosystems. We are collaborating with Prof. Ruth Bastardo, Universidad Autonoma de Santo Domingo, in improving our understanding of stream ecosystems in the island.

Our project has the main goal of assessing macroinvertebrate assemblages and stream condition on the island. we are working on understanding how stream fauna responds to alterations due to human activities.  Among the proposed products, we will develop tools for evaluating stream condition.
